Teaching Philosophy
In my classes, I emphasize "why" and "how" questions. I use four core practices to help students wrestle with complex problems: "YourTakes" at the start of class to get every student writing and thinking from the very first minute, simulations to help students take different perspectives and think through consequences, clarity in instructions and examples, and a stakeholder mentality where every student's contribution matters. My goal is to build a classroom environment where students feel comfortable thinking for themselves while applying academic concepts to real-world problems, whether that's understanding the geostrategic importance of a handful of straits, how cultural contexts shape military strategy, or who actually makes U.S. foreign policy.
